GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION:  Amherst is a small, New England town, located in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts at the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains.  The  Pioneer Valley is home to many colleges and universities and is rich in cultural offerings. All meeting events (registration, reception, sessions, posters, workshops and banquet) will be held on the Amherst College campus.  Please note that Amherst College is distinct from – and across town from – the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. General sessions of the SBN meeting will be in the Buckley Recital Hall and poster sessions will be in Valentine Hall of Amherst College (maps of Amherst College).

HOUSING: Rooms have been reserved in Amherst College dormitories and at local area hotels. See Housing Information for details.

TRANSPORTATION: By car, Amherst is about two hours west of Boston and three hours north of New York City.  (Driving directions to Amherst College).  Parking on the Amherst College campus will be free to all registrants with a parking pass that can be picked up at registration.  For those who will be flying, the closest airport is Bradley, which is located just north of Hartford, Connecticut, about a 50-minute drive from AmherstValley Transporter [(800) 872-8752 or (413) 253-1350] runs regular shuttle service from Bradley airport to Amherst and neighboring towns.  The cost is $35 each way (between 7 am – 9 pm; $40 after hours). They will pick you up right outside of your terminal at the airport and drop you off at the campus, or at any address in the area.  You are strongly urged to reserve ahead to guarantee a seat on the shuttle.

CLIMATE AND ATTIRE:  Summer in New England is generally very green and beautiful, and most days in June are comfortable.  Conditions are variable, however, and thunderstorms or patches of very hot, humid weather are possible (Check weather.com for up-to-date information). The meeting rooms are air conditioned, but some events will be held outdoors, under tents.  Meeting participants are urged to bring clothing with all this in mind.  Attire for the conference will be casual.

REGISTRATION FORM AND FEES: The meeting registration fee includes refreshments at the opening reception, lunch each day of the meeting as well as morning and afternoon coffee breaks. The fee also covers the cost of one banquet ticket.

*Please Note that for those wishing to present a poster, the deadline for Abstract submission is March 1 to allow for publication in Hormones and Behavior.

REFUNDS: Requests for refunds will be honored until June 1st. Requests made after that date will be considered on an individual basis following the meeting.

WORKSHOP: A Workshop on Contemporary Issues in Aggressive Behavior will be offered on Wednesday afternoon, June 26, in Cole Assembly Room (the “Red Room”) of Converse Hall, Amherst college.  This Workshop is open to all registrants at no additional cost.

RECEPTION AND REGISTRATION:  There will be an opening reception from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Wednesday, June 26th, on the Green outside of Valentine Dining Hall.  Registration will take place inside of Valentine Hall from 3 - 8 pm on
Tuesday, June 25, 10am - 8pm on Wednesday, June 26, and will resume in Valentine Hall from 8:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. on June 27, 28 and 29.

SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS: Morning and afternoon sessions will be held in the Buckley Recital Hall of the Arms Music Center, Amherst College, on June 27, 28, & 29. Three poster sessions will be held in the Lewis-Sebring room of Valentine Hall during the late afternoon and early evening on the same dates.

STUDENT PROGRAM: Several events and workshops are being planned by the Student Affairs Committee.  Details will be posted soon.

POSTERS: Poster presenters may begin putting up their posters at 8:30 a.m. on the day of their presentation, and must take down their poster by 8:30 a.m. the following day. The boards are 4 feet high by 7 feet long with a display surface on each side.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS:  35mm slide projection as well as LCD projection (for PowerPoint presentations) will be available at all sessions and a speaker ready room will be provided to practice talks and check slides.  Those with other needs should contact the meeting organizers.

MEALS: Morning and afternoon coffee breaks and lunch in the Valentine Dining Hall will be provided during the meeting. A variety of options for breakfast and dinner are available on and off campus.  A list of restaurants in the area will be provided with the registration materials, or see Amherst and Northampton restaurant listings.

BANQUET: A New England Clam and Lobster Bake under a tent (weather permitting) will be held the evening of the final meeting day (June 29th), from 7:00 p.m. through 11:00 p.m.  Music will be provided following the banquet. The price of the banquet is included in the registration fee.  Additional tickets are available for US$ 40 each.
