2002 Meeting Housing

Housing Information - SBN 2002 in Amherst

The meeting this year will be held at the Amherst College campus in Amherst, Massachusetts (take a virtual tour of Amherst College). Participants have the choice to either stay in dormitories on campus or in one of several hotels in the area.

Dormitories

This is the least expensive option. Dorm rooms are $32 per night without breakfast or $36.20 per night with breakfast (served in the Amherst College Dining Commons).  The dorm rooms are not air-conditioned and are basic in their furnishing (no phones or TVs in individual rooms and bathrooms are down the hall). However, these are nicer than your average dormitories. They are in attractive buildings, are carpeted, have common lounges with TVs, and every room is equipped with an Ethernet connection for your lap top. Most important, all of the dorm rooms are within an easy stroll through the Amherst College campus to meeting events and to the shops and restaurants of downtown Amherst. To choose this option, complete the Housing Request Form (This is a pdf fill-in form), and the local organizing committee will make room assignments on a first-come, first-served basis.

Area Hotels

We have blocked rooms in several area hotels and inns, listed below.  Registrants wishing to stay in a hotel rather than in a dorm room must make their own reservations by contacting these hotels directly.

** When calling, please identify yourself as a participant of the “SBN meeting” in order to get the contracted price. **

** Please make your hotel reservation timely. From May 10 onwards these rooms will be sold to the general public, and housing in local hotels will get progressively more difficult to secure. **

The largest blocks of rooms are at the Holiday Inn Express, Howard Johnson, and The Inn at Northampton. For those wishing something a little different, we have also reserved rooms at a number of local bed and breakfast inns in Amherst.  Rooms at the bed and breakfasts are very limited in number and registrants wishing this option are urged to make their reservations early. Also, please note that the Amherst/Northampton area is a popular weekend vacation spot during the summer.  For this reason, you will find that room rates at many of the hotels in the area are higher for Friday and Saturday nights than during the week.

Hotels in the towns of Amherst and Hadley are all within a couple miles of the Amherst College campus. Amherst is a charming New England college town, centered around a common green. Amherst has a surprising number of good quality restaurants, coffee shops and book stores for a small town, but less to offer in terms of night life. The Northampton hotels are farther from campus (~ ten miles) but close to the vibrant downtown of Northampton, which is rapidly becoming one of the culinary centers of New England, and offers a variety of shopping and night life options.  Registrants staying in the Hadley and Northampton hotels will need a car, or a friend with a car. Registrants staying in the Amherst inns can in many cases walk to the meeting.  Approximate distances from each hotel to the Amherst College Campus are indicated below.

The Hadley Hotels

The Howard Johnson and Holiday Inn are situated close to malls, about 2 miles from the Amherst College campus; in both cases a continental breakfast is included. Room rates at the Howard Johnson are $65 per weekday night and $109 on Friday and Saturday nights. Rates at the Holiday Inn (which is brand new) are $87 weekday and $119 weekend.  Rates are based on double occupancy; slightly higher rates apply with more than two people in the room.
