The Academic Job Search: When, Where, and How

Drs. John Buntin, Paul Heideman, Ruth Wood, and Catherine Woolley will discuss the ins and outs of the academic job search process. Topics for discussion include:

  • Your record: what you need to do beforehand to build a strong CV
  • Making connections at scientific meetings and beyond: networking skills
  • Job search nuts and bolts (identifying appropriate jobs, preparing your cover letter, CV, research and teaching statements; the interview; the follow-up; negotiating the deal)
  • The job search process from the other side of the table: different hiring priorities for different types of institutions
The format for the workshop will use brief presentations by the speakers followed by an informal question and answer session. Organized by the Education Committee (Workshop chaired by Dr. John Buntin)

THURSDAY, JUNE 26

Diversity in Research and Education: Building the Faculty We Need.

This is a workshop for faculty, administrators, and students, and is for everyone, not just minorities. This workshop will focus on strategies for the recruitment and retention of minorities in behavioral neuroendocrinology. Some of these strategies may be of use to faculty and administrators who have responsibility for mentoring and recruiting students; some strategies may be of use to students as they try to negotiate the world of academia. This is advise that will be of use to all students.

The workshop will start with a presentation by Dr. Danielle Gray of Emory University. Dr. Gray is a faculty member in the Department of Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology and is Deputy Director of Education for the NSF Center for Behavioral Neuroscience. Dr. Gray will present strategies used by the center to increase the candidate pool of underrepresented minorities for graduate school and scientific careers by employing a holistic, comprehensive pipeline. Following the formal presentation, Drs. Lynda Brown (University of Cincinnati), Sean Veney (Michigan State University), and Jennifer Swann (Lehigh University) will facilitate an informal discussion of these issues, highlighting important issues at different career stages (e.g. recruiting undergraduates, graduate admissions decisions, sources of funding, providing mentorship). (Organized by the Program Committee and the Education Committee. Workshop chaired by Drs. Kiran Soma and Teresa Horton.
